Andrejs Prigičevs

Andrejs Prigičevs is a well-known restorer and interior designer. He also paints and creates installations. The film “Kad āboli ripo” (When the Apples Roll, 2009) was produced by the studio “Rija” based on his drawings. But for a broader audience, Prigičevs is best known for his outwardly childish mise en scenes which give impetus to ironic self-discovery and viewing many events from a different angle.

These small-sized objects are like little stages complete with actors, props and decorations, which in an easily comprehensible manner play out stories or satirical scenes from out sometimes absurd, sometimes tragicomic lives.

In creating his miniature scenes, the artist presents the viewer with not always positive or popular subjects, which hypothetically raise local and international socio-political and moral issues.

For example, the work “Aliens rob the Farm’’ is based on a story told by a man who heard it from a woman who was visited one night by aliens, who stacked her firewood but then kept her awake with their loud partying.
