Darja Meļņikova

Darja Meļņikova works in a range of media, including installations, graphics and performance. Meļņikova’s visual improvisations often feature references to historical artistic movements such as surrealism, cubism and constructivism, whose formal syntax is freely adopted by the artist for her commentary on contemporary social and cultural issues. 

In the installation and graphics series “Meet Mr. Jazzy Sunday” the artist explores the 21st century rat race, offering her interpretation of an escape plan, even just for one Sunday. Mr. Jazzy Sunday is an abstract, invented character, who represents everyone’s familiar, beloved weekend state of mind, when one’s thoughts are no longer preoccupied with urgent work, projects and future plans. Instead, going with the flow of life, one can enjoy each moment freely and spontaneously without any hurry.
