Ēriks Božis

Ēriks Božis belongs to the second generation of conceptualists, who delighted in expanding artistic boundaries. The artist has taken part in exhibitions since the mid-1990s. The essence of his art is an ironic interplay between space and out perception, manipulating familiar things and situations, which Božis invites us to see from another angle. The installation “The Protecting Sky” uses ready-made form to critically appraise contemporary society and what we consume on a daily basis. A suspended ceiling is one of the standard attributes of the consumerist good life, whose main function is to cover over all defects. In Božis’ installation, this “façade of life” loses its fake horizontal stability, and together with a trembling, bluish Venetian blind hovers crookedly in weightless condition. This false shell divorced from reality becomes an object to observe and reflect upon.
