Gļebs Panteļejevs

Gļebs Panteļejevs is one of Latvia’s best-known sculptors, who has created many national monuments as well as fine art sculpture, outdoor objects and monumental sculpture. Panteļejevs’ works stand out for their plastic sense of form, emotional and philosophical compositional solutions, the selection of materials which support his idea which are often non-traditional and unusual for sculpture and his skilful finishing. In his sculptural work “Sperm” executed almost to perfection, the artist depicts Lenin’s head and face emerging from an ocean of sperm. This metaphorically depicts the revolution, which in the artist’s interpretation was a symbol of fertility in contrast to the stagnating monarchy of the late 19th and early 20th century. On the other hand, throughout world history, the seed of revolution has “spawned” monsters as well as progress.
