Ieva Rubeze

Poetic video and installation artist Ieva Rubeze creates highly imaginative artworks. Her work has a clear conceptual core, revealing the paradoxical in the thought process, wit and timeless radiance. The offbeat imagery and broad emotional spectrum presented by the artist is often accompanied by the presence of mystical and other “unknown” worlds.

In “Medicine” performances by Latvian magicians and healers are broadcast as therapeutic movie screenings. The white noise used as an accompaniment which TV channels used to air at night after regular programming had ended is transformed in this pseudo-spiritual séance into calming, hypnotic natural sounds, like a rain shower or a waterfall. Spiritualist, occult and hypnosis-based practices which were popular in the 20th century are still around in the new millennium, encouraging Rubeze to use artistic means to explore these phenomena of contemporary culture.
