MAREUNROL’S / Marīte Mastiņa-Pēterkopa, Rolands Pēterkops
Established in 2006, MAREUNROL’S is the internationally best-known Latvian fashion label, which has won acclaim at many competitions, festivals, biennales and group exhibitions in Latvia and abroad. But the achievements of this artistic duo go well beyond the world of fashion, creating installations, short films, costumes for opera and theatre performances as well as stage design and visual arts works. In these artists’ work, fashion is a multifaceted form of 21st century art and design in which music, art, literature, cinema, life, drams and the material and the transcendent worlds meet. The artists give meaning to every detail. They seek to create clothing which tells a story and lives its life as the equal of conceptual artworks.
The attire created for the spring/summer 2017 collection was mainly created for the Valmiera Summer Theatre Festival performance “The Bugler of Tālava” in 2016, which was a collaboration with director Elmārs Seņkovs and the musicians of Shipsea, offering a chrestomathic, ballad version of the famous poem by Rūdolfs Blaumanis. In the artists’ interpretation, this is a reflection on the collective past, simultaneously seeking visual codes for the future and sensitively perceiving relationships between body, space, sound and movement. The work is based on the subtle relations between the depiction of a poetic landscape and an urban environment, which the individual perceives simultaneously through sound and space.
